Its December (Ember month) usually a time of celebration, joy, gifts, travels (vacation), laughter, entertainment but behind its beauty is a beast, it is also a period of fear, most especially for travelers. Travelers and their relatives hold their heart in their hands due to fear of road accident, road robbery, kidnappers and ritualist.
25th morning and 31st night of December is a tradition for Christians to attend church service. Unfortunately, on the 25th of December 2011, there was a bomb blast at st Theresa’s catholic church, Madalla, Suleja in Niger State close to Abuja which left 36 people dead, the rest of the Christmas was celebrated in fear, thou its 6 years ago but the memory remains fresh and triggers fear.
31st December 2010, ( new year’s eve) there was a bomb blast at a barrack outskirt of Abuja . Four people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and 26 were injured; according to defence minister Adetokunbo Kayode, all of the dead were civilians, as were most of the injured.
It is believed that mortality is high during December especially on the road. Christmas is usually the period majority of Nigerians kept for visiting extended families. A full house filled with persons you get to see once or twice in a year.
It is said that spiritual worshipers use human blood as sacrifices, either to get more wealth, to elongate their lives or for some other ritual and people believe that is the reason for high mortality during the festive period.
some believe the owners of few transport companies are ritualist, and that is the reason why their buses keep having too many accidents in which majority of the passengers die at the spot, they go as far as warning their relatives to stay away from such buses.
Though, the accidents has been attributed to drivers over speeding, distracted and reckless driving etc, , the roads are flooded with vehicles and most especially commercial drivers speed up in other to make more trips to get more money. with lots of cars and greedy drivers on the road, speeding, tailgating and road accident are bound to happen, but this anyway doesn’t change the myth of some people, they still believe its spiritual not natural. But whatever the cause may be, ensure as a driver you do the right thing and as a passenger you should caution the driver if he is being distracted or over speeding.
